board update

This is a 5'5" that my dad and I shaped out of an old board - we stripped the glass and decided to make a quad. The board looks insane, except for the cancer spots due to being shaped out of old foam. It's 5'5" x 19 1/4" x 2 5/8" - hopefully it's not too small. You can see how flat the deck is in one of the pics - all the rocker is in the bottom, so with any luck it should float and trim quite well.

I hate doing these, but check out the grain - they're going to be gorgeous after being glassed (nose and tail blocks for mom's board):

halloween revisited

we just threw out some uncarved pumpkins we had from halloween. here's this year's pumpkin - i used a dremel and i have to say it works quite well.

mexican mustache vending machine

A few weeks ago we went to El Taco de Mexico in Ventura. We were excited to find the 25 and 50 cent candy machines. However, the real excitement concerned the 50 cent mustaches, available in the sticky hand plastic bubbles (and they had sticky hands, too). They have everything from handle bar mustaches to little adolfs in every color. Here's a picture of the reaped rewards, hat and glasses not included:

got me a bonzer

So I lived with Evan Elder for almost a year and he has a nice quiver of Bonzers shaped by Malcom Campbell. I was lucky enough to ride a few of the them - I fell in love with his 6'3" round pin Russ Short. After thinking about it for way too long, I decided I wanted to shape one for myself. I saw it as a great opportunity to learn.

I talked with my friend Jacob, and he said his Dad (Malcom) would help me out with any questions. I met with Malcom to go over dimensions and measurements and the various specifics ( i.e. fin placement, rails, rocker, hard edge, bottom contours). A few days past, and I finished shaping and painting this one; I got it back from the glass shop 2 weeks ago.

It's 6'9" x 19 3/4" x 2 3/4"...and now I have a board to ride in bigger surf.

Kauai

I went to Kauai with the family for Grandma's 90th birthday. Luckily, Kyle and Guilda were there so we could meet up and go surf Hanalei. I got to ride one of Ross's Hawaiian Liddles, as well as Kyle's during an evening session. Good waves. Warm water. Great company.
